May 7, 2001 Tenants Harbor, ME Over the past year Great Eastern Mussel Farms has been featured twice on Martha Stewart Living, Good Eats on the TV Food Network, Made in Maine (on Maine's public television channel) and on numerous local television news broadcasts which have featured Great Eastern's new raft method of growing choice mussels. Mussels (mytulis edulis) are being featured in consumer media more than ever before. On the TV Food Network both Sara Moulton ("Cooking Live") and Emeril Lagasse ("Emeril Live") have featured mussels. In addition, the CBS Saturday Early Morning show featured mussels as the entree in the show's popular segment "Cooking on a Shoestring" during which a well-known chef prepares a meal for four consisting of an appetizer, main course and dessert for less than $20. Recently, mussels were featured in Good Housekeeping Magazine (with a circulation of 4.5 million) in a feature title "Quick Soups & Stews." In addition, mussels have been featured in numerous major regional newspapers including The Boston Globe, in which the writer claims, "Nothing empowers a novice cook with the sense of his own abilities like cooking up an easy and delicious mussel dish." Versatile & Economical What used to be a "trash" seafood is turning into one of the most popular, economical and elegant shellfish that can be used in appetizers, soups, salads and main courses. Despite that fact that the retail economy is slow, mussels are virtually inflation-proof because they are so economical. For instance the average price for a 2 lb. bag of mussels on the East Coast is $2.99 and the West Coast is $4.99 . The company asks that consumers call them at 1-888-229-1436 to determine prices in their local area. It is important to note that a 2 lb. bag is enough for an appetizer for four people or a main course for two people. | ||
