The Nutritional Benefits of Eating Mussels

March 7, 2002

Mussels are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which have been proven to prevent cardiovascular disease (CVD), the major cause of heart attacks and the number one killer in the U.S. About two Americans die each minute, often before age 65, as a result of CVD.

A new study, conducted in June, 1999, by the University of Maryland's Cooperative Research and Information Institute (CRII) and sponsored by the National Fisheries Institute, showed that at least one or two servings per week of seafood rich in Omega-3, including mussels, will provide a protective health benefit to consumers.
